By Kathy Smith

There are two botanic gardens within Brisbane, one in the city and the other located at Mt Coot-tha. Both gardens managed and maintained by Brisbane City Council. The botanic gardens at Mt Coot-tha, founded in 1970, are considered Queensland's premier subtropical botanic gardens with 52 hectare featuring more than 20,000 plants and approximately 5000 species.

Established in 1855, The City Botanical Gardens, Brisbane's first botanical gardens, are set on a botanic reserve. It tests crops and plants, from around the world, agreeable with growing in a subtropical climate. These gardens are regarded as the cradle of Queensland horticulture.

Eight floods came through the City Botanic Gardens, from 1870 to 1974, damaging valuable plant collections. Afterward it council looked into a flood free site and choose at Mt. Coot-tha, an open woodland site, five kilometers from the city center. The project began in 1970 and in January 1976 the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, were opened to the public.

Plant collections now have a series of distinctly different gardens. Each arranged in thematic and geographical displays. Nearly half the total area is occupied by the Australian Plant Communities. As a visitor you can enjoy, educational and research programs, a reference and lending library, and the Queensland State Herbarium.

With all of the shaded areas, as well as shelters, seating, toilets and drinking fountains, the Brisbane Botanic Gardens make for a perfect place to have an afternoon picnic. There are also three beautiful areas to have a wedding and a restaurant that offers table service and catering. The gardens are free to visit, and are open daily from 8:00am until 5:30 pm.
