What You Need To Know About Melbourne Convention Centre

By Jasmine Zahara

The Melbourne Convention Centre, located in Melbourne, Australia, is the biggest center of its kind in the Southern hemisphere. It overlooks the Yarra river and is a part of the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Also called the MCEC for short, it is close to all types of transportation and can host anything from a simple conference to a full gala of extraordinary proportions.

The Melbourne Convention Centre has 32 meeting rooms and a large banquet room. AV and communications technology is built into rooms for the latest in updated conferencing, and some rooms have satellite control for smart lectern capability. It allows organizers and speakers to manage conferences themselves.

There are four categories of meeting rooms - small, medium and large, as well as a grand banquet room. The larger rooms, as well as some smaller, interconnect with other rooms to form similar spaces. The plenary supports everything from one speaker presentations to full on theater productions.

The plenary is also moveable, with walls that can be divided to form three other theaters. Inside the exhibition centre is a 493 seat auditorium, and it is the only event venue that has been awarded Green Globe accreditations as well as WasteWise awards. Green building is an important aspect for the convention centre.

It also boasts the largest floor space without pillars in the Southern world at a huge 30,000 metres. Denton Corker Marshall were the architects, and the centre has an entrance foyer that can fit 8,400 and glass walls with views of the river.

Another accolade is the Six Green Star Award, which was awarded by the Green Building Council of Melbourne, making the Melbourne Convention Centre the first convention centre in the world to be awarded such. It features a highly sustainable design, with comfortable air flow using displacement ventilation, which uses less energy, and glass walls so that natural light can warm the building better.

A black wastewater treatment plant recycles wastewater, and lighting is energy efficient while fixtures are water efficient. The fixtures use a chemical system in order to be gentler on the environment. Carbon dioxide monitoring ensures fresh air, while paints and sealants are low in VOC's, otherwise known as volatile compounds. Timber is taken from the Forest Stewardship Council as well.

For those planning an event, full catering is available. 1,500 guests fit in the banquet room, which can also be separated into two rooms. Produce is bought strictly from regional farmers, and Victorian wine is bought from small local vineyards. Only the best ingredients are used in the kitchens and superb attention to cooking and presentation. Tastings are available for clients.

Melbourne, Australia is a pleasant setting as well, with its warm climates, safety, beautiful landscapes and friendly people. Getting to the convention centre is easy, with the Melbourne airport flying in over three hundred international and a thousand domestic flights in per week.

The Melbourne Convention Centre is a marvel of technology, environmental sustainability, and function, able to serve guests with their every need regardless of the event, big or small. It is unmatched in its versatility and compatibility.
