Angus had acquired a piece of art by David Prentice and the pair of them discussed the endless problems suffered by local artists, including the extreme lack of venues and general support. The discussion led to the creation of Ikon which was to be a "gallery without walls".
Skene provided the initial funds for the project, which consisted of mobile exhibitions in such varied locations as post offices and cinemas in a motorcycle sidecar, the idea being to make art more accessible to the general public. In order to keep the overheads down staffing duties was by the family, friends and the founding artists who did not charge. In 1965 the Ikon Gallery was given a glass walled kiosk in the famous Bull Ring shopping centre.
During the next two decades the Ikon Gallery moved from place to place until 1997 when it bought, with aid from the National Lottery, its present premises, the former Oozells Street Board School. recently the Ikon Gallery has put on a number of exhibitions and its continuous ability to excel has led to it becoming immensely popular, to such a degree that in 2006 it opened a further gallery, the Ikon Eastside in Digbeth.
