Australian's Favorite Brisbane Locations

By Kathy Smith

Fortitude Valley gets is name from the 19th century ship, the SS Fortitude. Today it is one of Brisbanes most popular destinations but not that long ago it was know for its gambling dens, brothels and unpleasant characters. Now it is home to newly renovated Queenslander style houses, brand new high-rise apartment blocks, and warehouses and wool stored are being converted into hip inner city residences.

Fortitude Valley is a place for those who want to get away from suburbia and live in a fashionable new apartment close to a lot of nightlife. This is not a place for those who want to relax in a quite environment. Fortitude Valley is full of nightclubs, bars and cafes especially in Brunswick Street.

Know as the "Valley" it is still home to private art galleries and artists studios with the Judith Wrights Centre of Contemporary Art as its creative hub. On Ann Street, which runs across Brunswick, offers cutting-edge fashion and new pubs and bars such as the GPO, a bar in the former Fortitude Valley Post Office.

The younger generations are drawn to the "Valley" due to its fabulous restaurants and Chinatown. Only 1 km from Brisbane's city centre, you will find that 70% of these households are couples without children. You will also find that most housing is apartments, as there are few detached homes left in the area.

Dining out here is a must however for young or old and five of the best restaurants are :

Garuva Hidden Tranquility restaurant and Bar- a rainforest foyer leading to your table with delicacies such as Shark fin and Chinese Roast Beef

Vietnamese restaurant- a no-nonsense restaurant offering exquisite food

Monsoon- Asian and Australian style foods in a modern restaurant

Sunbar Restaurant and Lounge- A sophisticated and fashionable place to enjoy your evening

Mellinos- The best pizza and pasta around.
