Airlie Beach Australia - A Tourist Hotspot!

By Joseph Archibald

One of the favorite places for holiday makers in the whole of Australia, if not the world is that of Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach resides in Queensland, in the Whitsunday Region. It lies close to the great barrier reef thus its a magnet for tourists all year round.

The name of Whitsunday Islands actually came from the famous Captain James Cook, the explorer, back in 1770. He was travelling the area apparently on the day of Whitsunday - the Christian festival - and hence the name was given.

How to Get There
You can fly in to Prosperine Airport (also know as Whitsunday Coast Airport) either by Virgin airlines or Jetstar. There is a local train station too, the train travels along the length of the east coast of Australia. Greyhound and Premier coaches stop at Airlie on their way between Brisbane and Cairns.

Getting Around
There is a regular bus service between the town and the airport which costs $15 Australian for a one way ticket. The Taxis are the same price so if you can get one of those its the better option as they take you to your destination. Total journey time between central Airlie Beach and the airport is around 40 minutes.

What To Do
For swimming, Airlie Beach is not the best place. Between the months of October and May stinging jellyfish frequent the coastal waters. You can though either purchase or hire a "stinger suit" if you wish to swim in the ocean, which offers full protection against the jellyfish. Also there is a beautiful man made lagoon which stretches 50 meters wide by 200 meters long.

Through the day its watched over by life guards while at night its guarded by security people. Difficult to find any other place that's more safe for bathers. On Saturdays there is a local market on the beachfront that sells local souvenirs and food stuffs to meet all tastes.
