Your Antarctica 'What to Bring' Guide

By Roger Collins

Antarctica travel is seldom dull and boring. Some people however cannot get past the packing stage. This piece tells you which items are necessary for Antarctica travel and why. You cannot completely be sure of the weather so it is best to be equipped for anything.

Know from the start what cool temperatures you can tolerate. What some people consider too cold could be just all right for others. This is something to consider when mulling over Antarctica vacation travels. Good news for Antarctica vacationers is that the place enjoys weather that is not too rough. People often think Antarctica is an icy location. It is actually quite nice to tour the region.

Time is better spent thinking about how to layering apparel while on the Antarctica trip. Layering lightly will not only keep you warm but it will also be easier to move around. Being wrapped in layers warms you because heat stays within the different clothing. Wool and silk do a better job of insulation clothing made with cotton. Pay attention to this when purchasing suitable vacation clothing.

Go for outer covering that is resistant to water and wind. If you get wet or the wind hits you your body is less efficient when it comes to keeping you warm. This outmost layer is what makes the entire layering system effective.

Make sure your clothing under the rainproof gear is warm. Microfleece works great for this. Those who have gone on Antarctica trips are aware of this. Pants and sweaters are decent alternatives to wearing fleece if you want other options.

Pile on the first layer of thermal underwear so it is the one that your skin touches. This is a must for Antarctica trips. Silk or wool and polypropylene are the materials favored for thermal skivvies. They help you keep body heat inside as much as possible.

We then will get to the stuff that everyone packs on Antarctica cruises and trips. Do not forget to bring mittens socks and gloves on the trip. When you start to get cold it is usually because body heat is escaping from your hands and feet. Feet will stay warm if you put on pairs of socks. You can wear thin or thick or a mix of both.

Fingers that have become too cold leave a lot of people feeling down. Mittens and gloves usually are from fur or polypropylene material. If you can get some that are waterproof that would be even better. Bringing an extra pair can serve as backup in case something happens to the ones you have on.

People bound for Antarctic adventures need to pack a few hats for the trip. A large portion of the heat in your body wind up escaping if the head is bare. Headgear that also guards the forehead and ears from damage is best. Protect your neck and face from gusty Antarctic breezes by wrapping a shawl around yourself.

An Antarctic visit often conjures layered clothing ideas. Doing so will help avoid becoming too cold. Spare yourself from the trouble of looking for lost or damaged items by bringing all an exact duplicate of everything. The trip will be a banging success so long as you manage to remain warm.
