An introduction to Anglesey Holidays

By Alex Thompson

Located just off the coast of North Wales the Isle of Anglesey is a great place for a holiday. Near Anglesey is the historic town of Caernarfon as well as the scenic Snowdonia National Park. The island is famous for its amazing beaches and camping holidays and watersports are very popular.

The Isle of Anglesey comes with a wealth of history and evidence can be found of this at places such as Beaumaris Castle which lies on the north east coast of the island. The castle was built during the reign of Edward I of England over 800 years ago. Although never completed Beaumaris Castle is rated by many as one of the finest castles of its type in the world.

There's plenty to do outdoors on Anglesey from activities and farm parks to coastal walks. There are two country parks located close to Holyhead on the islands west coast. Penrhos Nature Reserve is a chance to view many of Anglesey's native species and is just a few minutes from the centre of Holyhead.

The Breakwater Country Park was built at the same time as Holyhead's breakwater which allowed the town to become a major port. Stretching along the shores of Holyhead mountain the Breakwater Country Park has many country walks to enjoy. You should also take a walk over to South Stack on the islands western tip which stands on a rocky outcropping reached only by traversing a narrow suspension bridge.

Watersports enthuasists love Anglesey with its many wonderful beaches. On the islands south coast is the village of Rhosneigr with two terrific beaches. You'll find a wide variety of activities going on at Rhosneigr such as sailing, fishing, diving, and canoeing.

If you fancy going more upmarket then Anglesey can cater to your needs as well. There are a number of high quality hotels on the island including the Tre Ysgawen Hall Country House Hotel which is located near the town of Llangefni at the centre of the island. Two other excellent hotels worth looking at are the Trearddur Bay Hotel and The Bulkeley Hotel.
